How heavy should a 2 man tent be?

A 2 man tent for backpacking weighs between about 1.5kg and 3kg. Shared between two people, a 2.5kg tent adds little more than 1kg to each rucksack, which is why a lightweight 2 man tent often costs less in carrying than two one man tents. Tents under 2kg save weight with thinner fabric and fewer poles, and give up some strength in wind to do it.

Should two people share one tent?

Yes, for most pairs. One 2 man tent weighs less than two one man tents, needs one pitch instead of two, and keeps both of you warmer on a cold night. Two separate tents make sense when you snore, keep very different hours, or want the option of splitting up on the walk.

Why do two doors and two porches matter in a 2 man tent?

Two doors let each person get out without climbing over the other. Two porches give each person somewhere dry for a rucksack and boots. A 2 man tent with one door and one porch is lighter, but on a wet night one porch fills up quickly with two sets of kit.

How much space do two people really need?

Two people need an inner width of at least 105cm, because two standard sleeping mats are about 51cm wide each. An inner width of 120cm or more lets you turn over without waking the other person. Check the inner length too: a 2 man tent built for two adults has about 210cm to 230cm, the same as a one man tent.

Is a 2 man tent better for tall campers?

A 2 man tent gives a tall solo camper room to lie diagonally and space inside for kit, which a one man tent can't. Campers over 6ft 2in should check the inner length on each product page, because a wider tent is not always a longer one.

Which 2 man tent shape handles wind best?

Tunnel 2 man tents handle wind best when pitched tail into it; dome 2 man tents are easier to pitch and stand on their own. A tunnel 2 man tent gives more usable space for its weight, which matters with two people inside. A trekking-pole 2 man tent is the lightest to carry, and takes practice to pitch tightly.

What season rating do you need?

A 3-season 2 man tent suits UK camping from March to October. A 4-season 2 man tent has stronger poles, less mesh and a lower profile for winter and exposed mountain ground. Most pairs starting out need a 3-season tent.

How do you split a 2 man tent between two rucksacks?

Split a 2 man tent by giving one person the flysheet and inner and the other the poles and pegs. Pack the flysheet near the top of the rucksack so it comes out first in rain. Agree who carries what before you set off, so nobody gets to camp without the poles.

Questions people ask

What's the difference between a 2 man tent and a 2 person tent?
Nothing. "2 man", "two man" and "2 person" all describe a tent that sleeps two adults. The name is a capacity term used across the industry.
Can one person use a 2 man tent?
Yes. A 2 man tent gives a solo camper room for kit inside and space to sit up and change. It weighs more to carry alone, so compare it with a one man tent before you choose.
Will two people fit with their rucksacks inside?
Usually not. The inner of most 2 man tents fits two sleeping mats and little else. Rucksacks and boots go in the porches, which is why two porches help.
Is a 2 man tent good for wild camping?
Yes, if it's light enough to carry and small enough to pitch on a small patch of ground. Check the weight, the packed size and the footprint of the tent on each product page.
