A 2 man tent for backpacking weighs between about 1.5kg and 3kg. Shared between two people, a 2.5kg tent adds little more than 1kg to each rucksack, which is why a lightweight 2 man tent often costs less in carrying than two one man tents. Tents under 2kg save weight with thinner fabric and fewer poles, and give up some strength in wind to do it.
Yes, for most pairs. One 2 man tent weighs less than two one man tents, needs one pitch instead of two, and keeps both of you warmer on a cold night. Two separate tents make sense when you snore, keep very different hours, or want the option of splitting up on the walk.
Two doors let each person get out without climbing over the other. Two porches give each person somewhere dry for a rucksack and boots. A 2 man tent with one door and one porch is lighter, but on a wet night one porch fills up quickly with two sets of kit.
Two people need an inner width of at least 105cm, because two standard sleeping mats are about 51cm wide each. An inner width of 120cm or more lets you turn over without waking the other person. Check the inner length too: a 2 man tent built for two adults has about 210cm to 230cm, the same as a one man tent.
A 2 man tent gives a tall solo camper room to lie diagonally and space inside for kit, which a one man tent can't. Campers over 6ft 2in should check the inner length on each product page, because a wider tent is not always a longer one.
Tunnel 2 man tents handle wind best when pitched tail into it; dome 2 man tents are easier to pitch and stand on their own. A tunnel 2 man tent gives more usable space for its weight, which matters with two people inside. A trekking-pole 2 man tent is the lightest to carry, and takes practice to pitch tightly.
A 3-season 2 man tent suits UK camping from March to October. A 4-season 2 man tent has stronger poles, less mesh and a lower profile for winter and exposed mountain ground. Most pairs starting out need a 3-season tent.
Split a 2 man tent by giving one person the flysheet and inner and the other the poles and pegs. Pack the flysheet near the top of the rucksack so it comes out first in rain. Agree who carries what before you set off, so nobody gets to camp without the poles.
One Man Tents doesn't encourage anyone to break the law. Wild camping rules differ across the UK: it's permitted on most unenclosed land in Scotland under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, and on the Dartmoor Commons in England. Elsewhere in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, you need the landowner's permission. Always check before you pitch. Wild camping in the UK
